Snoring and Acid Reflux

Snoring and acid reflux have a relationship that not many people know. The snoring sound generally occurs when something is creating a disturbance in the breathing process while sleeping. It can be cold, allergies, sinus and many other things that can block the airways in one way or another. One possible cause for snoring that not many people are aware is the acid reflux. Acid reflux is basically when the gastric fluids in the stomach come up through the esophagus.

Since the trachea is very close to the esophagus only separated by the epiglottis (covered by a small membrane) when the fluids come up too high it will block the passage of air creating a disturbance in the breathing which lead can lead to snoring. There is a condition called GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) which causes the acid levels in the stomach to increase too much and go up the esophagus making sleep very hard.

Sleep apnea which is one of the main conditions that lead to snoring can be worse by suffering acid reflux disease. The flow of acid near the throat area will make breathing even harder than already is making the effects of the sleep apnea even more dangerous. As you can see snoring and acid reflux are related in many ways.

Acid Reflux Symptoms

There are several symptoms related to acid reflux and GERD the most common is heartburn which is a burning feeling in the chest and throat. This burning feeling is normally felt in combination with chest pain. Sometimes the acid could damage the esophagus which could lead to cancer. Other symptoms are discomfort in the upper abdomen, the sensation of being full in the stomach and strong nausea after eating. The GERD could also produce hiccups, trouble swallowing and the need to clear the throat.

The snoring and acid reflux effects are normally produced when ingesting large amounts of acid foods. The acid reflux effect is felt strongly especially if exercising or sleeping after a highly acidic meal. Acid reflux can sometimes be caused by mal functioning of the stomach muscles. Some substances and drugs can cause the stomach muscles to stop functioning properly. Other less frequent causes are abnormalities on the esophagus like hernias caused by an accident.

The most important aspect in treating acid reflux is to start eating healthy. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables is the key to avoid getting 90% of diseases like GERD and acid reflux. This way you will get healthy in almost every aspect and won’t need to rely on chemical substances that might cause side effects that could be even worse than the disease their treating. Snoring and acid reflux can be treated but it requires a compromise from your part to start living a healthier life style with nutrition and exercises. Remember to see your doctor if you notice any of the symptoms to start getting out of control or if you detect something unusual.
