Apnea Sleep Disorders
Apnea sleep disorders are among the most common sleep disorders. One thing in common that all sleep disorders have is the interruption of the sleeping time. Sleep apnea is one of the most frequent sleeping disorders that people complain about. Normally the complain is done by their sleeping partners as they are the ones that listen to the very loud snoring that apnea can produce.
The sleep apnea condition goes well beyond normal snoring. A person suffering from sleep apnea will stop breathing for a few seconds while sleeping and then start breathing again while producing a loud snore. This type of episode occurs several times during the night and the result is very low quality resting time for the person who suffers it and anyone close to him.
The lack of oxygen during the sleep apnea episodes can develop into several other health related conditions like concentration problems, depression and even cardiac issues. Generally is hard for anyone to know they are experiencing sleep apnea unless they wake up in the middle of the night without air or their sleeping partner alert them to it.
Causes of Sleep Apnea
The apnea sleep disorders can be caused by several factors. If you are a male, overweight, smoke, drink alcohol and or have high blood pressure is very likely you experiencing this condition. Other times an abnormality in the throat muscles and or enlarged tonsils are responsible for the illness. A medical test called sleep study is the one used to diagnose the condition. Sleep apnea can be divided into 3 types: obstructive, central and complex sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common one and an obstruction in the throat area is responsible for it. Central sleep apnea occurs when the brain stops sending a signal to the lungs to continue breathing. Complex sleep apnea is a combination of the 2 previous ones.
Treatments for Sleep Apnea
Apnea sleep disorders can be treated in several ways. The first step toward getting cured is to follow a healthier life style that includes: eating lots of vegetables and fruits (which helps on weight loss), stop drinking alcohol to avoid muscles relaxing before sleeping and quitting smoke for obvious reasons. When the previous steps are not enough there is a device called cpap or continuous positive airway pressure machine that helps you breathe easier. The machine also known as sleep apnea machine keeps a steady of flow of air going to your lungs and the positive pressure that it applies prevent the throat muscles from relaxing and obstructing the airways. There is a last resort to deal with the apnea sleep disorders and is surgery. Surgery is used to remove enlarged tonsils and any other tissue that could be causing the airway blockage. The surgery can be a bit painful and can take some time to completely heal but if the condition is too severe it will be able to restore your sleeping days.
